QUOTES OF THE WEEK: From John J. Chaput, Ferris State University men’s basketball coach Bill Sall …

“Fortunately we have a growing business. We’re busy; we’re making a lot of product at (the company’s Maple Street plant), and this facility on Dekraft is where we inventory and warehouse the product.”

— John J. Chaput, president of Big Rapids Products. The Big Rapids Planning Commission unanimously approved a site plan for the company to add a 23,400-square-foot addition to the facility on Dekraft Avenue after receiving mostly favorable feedback toward the proposal.

“(The center) is a good opportunity for students to immerse themselves in math and science. From the stories I’ve heard from students, they finally feel they have a niche and a place to work in a dynamic group. It’s a great opportunity for students who are like-minded to come together in a setting with others that they couldn’t in a local school.”

— Jennifer Harrison, Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District director of the Math/Science/Technology Center. The future of the center depends on the number of incoming applicants. The MOISD Board of Education opted Monday to wait and see how many students applied before deciding what, if any, action to take.

“It’s a special group. There are a lot of tears in that locker room right now because it’s an amazing group of seniors. They’re champions, and they’ll always have a special place in my heart, not because they’re great basketball players and competitors, but great men.”

— Ferris State University men’s basketball coach Bill Sall, on what his team has accomplished this season. Bellarmine hit enough shots to take the Bulldogs out of the game in the second half on Tuesday.

“I’m not closing Pepper’s at all – I’m going to stay here until we sell.”

— Sharon Dunn, owner of Pepper’s Cafe and Deli, which was quietly put up for sale in January. Several local residents have shown interest in purchasing the restaurant, located at 121 N. Michigan Ave. in downtown Big Rapids, but she has yet to sell the business.

“(Wrestling) is a sport that if you want to be the best you have to invest a lot of time, but that comes with a price. I love being involved with the kids lives and it was a difficult decision, but the right decision. (My kids) are my No. 1 priority.”

— Bill Bonning, Big Rapids High School wrestling coach, who made the decision during Christmas break to quit coaching after nine years leading the program.
