Baldwin athletes reflect on track season

BIG RAPIDS — It’s been an impressive season for track at Baldwin this spring and some of their athletes, including long jumpers Alex Torres and Andon Ware, had a chance to display their talents Friday at the Pioneer Track & Field championships.
The Panthers have been short in numbers.
Torres, at 15-3, took fifth in the long jump, just a quarter-inch off her best time for a year ago. Ware wasn’t able to place.
“I jumped pretty well,” Torres, a junior, said. “I have gotten better but I could still do better.”
Torres has been a top point scorer for Baldwin during the season.
“It’s been a good season,” she said. “We’ve had more people come out this year. That’s been fun.”
The long jump was the best event for Torres during the season.
“I’ve improved a lot,” she said, adding that the 100-meter dash has also been a strong event. She was seventh in 14.50 in the Pioneer meet on Friday.
Ware, a sophomore, was disappointed with his performance on Friday at Top Taggart Field. His best effort was 17-5 1/2.
Ware’s best during the season has been 18-7.5.
“The season has been fun,” he said. “We’re placing high in a lot of the races.”
Ware’s best memory so far was second place for his 400-meter and 800-meter relays in the West Michigan D League meet. He also ran in an 800-meter relay race on Friday and the foursome was fifth in 1:37.98.
Also a standout basketball and football player, Ware, who will keep busy in those two sports during the summer, said track keeps him in shape for both of those sports.
“It gets my endurance and speed up for football as well as basketball,” he said.
During the summer, Torres runs a lot and plays basketball. She’s also played two games as a catcher for coach Bob Hilts’ softball team to help out with numbers.
Asked if she’s been able to hit the ball during games, Torres smiled and replied, “yeah, I hit it. And the ball has hit me.”
