Cards tripped up by Hornets

Central Montcalm builds early lead, doesn’t let up in 45-0 win over Big Rapids

BIG RAPIDS — Central Montcalm football coach Marty James looked at the scoreboard Thursday at Top Taggart Field in disbelief.

Hornets 45, Cardinals 0.

Central Montcalm is now 2-0 on the season while Big Rapids is 0-2.

“Quite honestly, the last three or four years, they have given us fits,” James said. “I never, ever expected this.”

It began on the first drive and never really stopped for Central Montcalm.

The Hornets took their opening drive and marched down the field and scored on a 17-yard run by Lucas Emmons.

Central Montcalm would add two more touchdown runs in the first half — a 1-yard run by Tyler Ruffer and a 5-yard scamper by Emmons for a 22-0 halftime lead.

“Our coaching staff really worked hard on getting our offense going this week,” James said. “Big Rapids made some nice adjustments and we adjusted to their adjustments and the kids responded.”

Big Rapids had two nice drives in the first half before a pair of penalties stalled the drive. The first play of the game saw Nick Baldwin race 62 yards to inside the Hornets 20-yard line.

The Cardinals finished the drive with a 40-yard field goal attempt that was just wide right. Big Rapids had another drive go inside the Central Montcalm 40 yard line before stalling because of penalties.

The Cardinals offense was paced by Nick Baldwin with 195 yards rushing on 22 carries.

“It wasn’t a lack of effort,” Baldwin said. “We were unorganized in the huddle, pointing fingers — that’s what hurt us the most.”

Central Montcalm kept the scoring coming in the third quarter as Emmons scored on a 9-yard run. Then it was the defense’s turn as Sam Rockafellow scored on a 50-yard fumble return.

Will Plavan capped the scoring with a 16-yard run after a Big Rapids fumble.

Jon Fickle led the Hornets rushing attack with 98 yards on the ground. Emmons added 55 more yards.

“Let’s not sugar coat this,” Big Rapids coach Mitch Cumings said. “Let’s call it what it is — they beat us up.”

The Cardinals are in action Friday when they travel to White Cloud.
