Bouwman found guilty of criminal sexual conduct

LEELENAU COUNTY – Big Rapids resident David Bouwman was found guilty on Friday of one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Leelanau County’s 13th Circuit Court.

The jury deliberated for more than five hours before publishing its verdict shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday.

The charge against Bouwman stems from a February 2010 fishing trip he took with the complainant. This week, the complainant, a Big Rapids man, testified that Bouwman offered to take him to the Bouwman family’s Suttons Bay cabin for a weekend. On their way to the cabin, the pair stopped at several bars and, when they arrived at the cabin, the complainant testified that he was very inebriated. The man said he passed out and later awoke to find Bouwman performing a sex act on him.

Throughout the trial, the man claimed he had been drugged by Bouwman, but police and medical staff testified that drug screens showed no evidence of drugs in the man’s system on the morning of the assault.
