Part of Ferris campus loses power; complete shutdown at 2 p.m.

BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State University’s Big Rapids campus will be without power for about three hours today, starting at 2 p.m.

Portions of the campus lost power this morning when a switch went out.

Ferris runs on a three-phase electrical system, provided by Consumer’s Energy, said Mike Hughes, associate vice president of Ferris’ physical plant. As Consumer’s worked to fix the first switch that went out, they discovered another switch that needed repair.

“We have to shut down the whole campus to make the repair,” Hughes said.

By waiting until 2 p.m., a minimal number of classes will have to be canceled for the campus-wide power outage, he said.

Residence halls and residential dining facilities will remain open, but all other campus facilities, including FLITE library, will be closed until the power comes back on.

The conference center at Holiday Inn, the Racquet and Fitness Center and Katke Golf Course run on separate switchboards and will not be affected by the power outage.
