Ten Pins Topics: Keep the strikes rolling in

It appears that my article last week did some good as I received a cash of league reports this week. In looking back, I see there are a couple of scores that really need to be mentioned. Bowling in the Friday Night Men’s league; John Henry rolled a 300 game back in September and Josh Graham rolled an 807 series a couple of weeks ago with a 296 game. Great bowling guys!

So, how is it that they were able to put so many strikes together? I came across an article that may help figure some of it out for you. It suggested there are five secrets that successful bowlers employ.

First, have an approach that benefits your individual style. Every bowler has their own pace and you need to have your individual style be in sync with your approach. Think of it as matching your arm swing to your feet.

Next, you need to maintain your balance from the beginning of the approach to the end. If you fall off balance you are using too much force which allows your swing to move away from your body and pull you off balance.

While this next tip may seem simple it really has a lot to do with your success. You need to always use properly fitting equipment. Ill fitting equipment can seriously impact your game.

Use light grip pressure in the ball to allow for a free flowing arm swing. The fit of your ball is important to allow you to hold on to it without squeezing. I’m still trying to master this one…

Finally, to maximize your accuracy and leverage you need to keep your swing and bowling ball underneath your bowling shoulder. If your arm drifts either around your back or to the side as you swing forward you lose accuracy and leverage.

Think about these five points and consider finding yourself a coach who can help you with your game. Remember to develop the timing and approach that fits your body style, flexibility and personality and above all, have fun!

This week, rolling highest for the ladies was Liz Herscher from the Gate House League with a 678 series and Holly Fish with a high game of 171 in the same league. From the men’s leagues, Josh Graham rolled a 279 game while competing in the Friday Night Men’s League and Pete Norriss from the Eastgate Dames & Dudes shot a 729 series.

Saturday is one of my favorite times of the year because we get to sleep in an extra hour! So, don’t forget to “fall back” and set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed or you will be an hour early for church in the morning… Good luck and good bowling!
