MURRAY SAYRE: Spectrum Health/MCMC merger will be bad for local health care

TO THE EDITOR:

“Important Medicare Advantage Information” was sent to me from Spectrum Health encouraging me to switch to Priority Health or Blue Care Network (HMO) so that I can continue my medical care without interruption. This is the omen of things to come for us with Spectrum Health.

An article in the Grand Rapids Press stated that subscribers of Blue Cross-Blue Shield (the largest health insurer in Michigan) were surprised to find Spectrum Health doctors and hospitals did not participate in the Blue Cross-Blue Shield plan. Is your doctor a Spectrum Health doctor?

If Spectrum Health doctors, hospitals, and Priority Health insurance are all controlled by one source, you have a monopoly. Any other insurance, such as MESSA, Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Humana or General Motors will be a non-participating insurance and be just a bump in the road for Spectrum Health. There will be no alternative open to you if they want to control all the health issues in the area.

At this time, we are negotiating a contract for a merger with Spectrum Health for our hospital. We are at the top of a very, very slippery slope. Once we go down this slope, we can not come back up. This is a merger. DON’T SELL THE FARM!
