Seeking a new SOAR leader

Enthusiastic, crafty volunteer needed to head Senior Center group

MECOSTA — Helping transport senior citizens who no longer drive to the Mecosta County Senior Center is only one goal of its Senior Outings and Recreation group. Another, equally as important part of the group, is the weekly activities and trips that are planned special for the group.

Each week, members of the SOAR group are transported to the center and can join in pre-planned activities, crafts, games or trips. It is the duty of a volunteer activity coordinator to have something planned each week for the group.

Due to a new job opening, the current activity coordinator, Marjean Nickerson, will be leaving the group the beginning of next year. The center is looking for someone who is enthusiastic, caring, likes crafts and can work well with a group to take over the position, said director Claudia Lenon.

Nickerson and the Senior Center hope to find a replacement before Jan. 1 to allow for an overlap to help train her replacement. Once the replacement is found, it will be that person’s responsibility to organize an activity or trip for the group each week.

The position can be shared by several individuals rather than having only one person fill the slot, Lenon said.

Although the SOAR group meets Tuesdays and Fridays and a volunteer is appreciated on both days, the center needs the most help on Tuesdays. The position usually requires the individual to be at the center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone interested in the position should visit the Senior Center, located at 12954 80th Ave. in Mecosta, or call the center at (231) 972-2884.
