EDITORIAL: Give the Gift of Life this holiday season

If you haven’t made out your Christmas gift list, we would ask you to consider giving the ultimate gift.

This gift won’t add debt to your credit card.

This gift won’t require you to stand in lines for hours.

This gift isn’t difficult to find – in fact, you already have it to give.

With Thanksgiving behind us, and the season of giving upon us, we urge you to visit the Michigan Secretary of State office online at www.michigan.gov/sos – you can receive the materials necessary to become an organ donor.

This year, give the Gift of Life.

Each year, many people die because they could not receive such an organ replacement. The Michigan Organ Donor Registry, and residents like you, can change that.

Whether a person dies of natural causes, or due to some catastrophic event, their organs can often be used to help save the lives of others. Many times, organs taken from one donor are used in a number of other recipients.

Adding your name to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry – all you need is your name, date of birth and driver’s license or state identification card number. After enrolling, you will receive a heart sticker for your driver’s license or ID card, designating your wish to be a donor.

The Michigan Organ Donor Registry is a confidential, 24-hour-a-day, computerized database that documents one’s wish to become an organ, tissue and eye donor.

With all the great gifts we’ll share this Christmas – of all the wonderful gifts we’ll give, and receive – we encourage you to become a member of the Michigan Donor Registry.

Please, give the Gift of Life.
