2012 Festival of the Arts Opening

Two artists’ work open festival at Artworks

BIG RAPIDS — Fourteen life-sized paintings of a Mayan funeral procession and origami artwork draped the walls of Artworks on Monday as the 2012 Festival of the Arts opening reception began.

Artists Winifred Godfrey and Linda Stephen exhibited their work to help open the month-long festival. After opening remarks by co-chairs Ed Mallett and Carrie Weis, Godfrey took the microphone to speak about her art.

Normally painting flowers, Godfrey became fascinated by the fabrics and culture of Guatemala after visiting the country in the mid-70s. Godfrey used a funeral procession as the backdrop to help her render the culture she fell in love with.

The first and last paintings in the series depict a realistic background with the subjects facing forward and backward respectively, which gives the illusion of a procession passing by. The rest of the paintings feature flat backgrounds so the viewer can focus on the intricate dress that defines the various villages represented in each painting.

“What this is about, is me telling a story,” she said. “It’s my story, my concert; whatever you would like to call it.”

Big Rapids-native Linda Stephen’s work also was on display. The Nebraskan creates art through origami. She first started folding paper into origami as a teenager at the United Church in Big Rapids. After she studied in Japan, Stephen took on folding as a career.

Both exhibits will be available to view now until Feb. 25 at Artworks.
