Mohawks make quick work of White Cloud, advance to district final

MORLEY — Two down one to go.

Morley Stanwood made quick work of White Cloud in Wednesday’s 72-23 for its second straight Class C district win of the week and will play Shelby in the title game Friday night.

The Mohawks, now 22-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state, fired out to a quick 11-0 lead over White Cloud. Bailey Cairnduff netted two threes while Brett Chesebro and Elyse Starck had one apiece in a first quarter that ended in a 26-8 Mohawk lead.

Alexis Huntey netted a triple and seven points in the second quarter. Her triple early in the second gave the Mohawks a 35-8 advantage. When she scored inside later in the quarter, it was 51-12.

Leading 51-15 at halftime, the Mohawks outscored White Cloud 15-0 in the third quarter as the running clock took effect.

“We looked like we were in tournament mode (Wednesday),” said Morley Stanwood coach Bob Raven. “It was a fast-paced game the first half.”

Cairnduff led the Mohawks with 18 points, followed by Huntey with 15 and Elyse Starck with 11. Huntey grabbed nine rebounds while Starck dished out five assists and Alyssa Nelson had four assists.

“A big goal that we had (Wednesday) was boxing out and defense,” Nelson said. “We know that Shelby has some tall posts. We wanted to get a lot of practice and work hard in practice at boxing out.”

Now, the Mohawks focus on the Tigers.

“Shelby’s got 18 wins,” Raven said. “They have a very good program. I’m sure they’ll be ready to play us. I’m looking forward to a good final. We’ll just do what we do.”

“We know when each other is going to cut, and that’s great,” Nelson said. “We’re like family.”

Mohawk guard Brett Chesebro said her team is ready to go after another title.

“I think coming out with intensity like we did tonight and coming out fast paced and doing what we do in practice,” will be a key factor, she said. “We played pretty good (Wednesday). We were on our game.”

Breanna Manchip scored eight points for the Indians.
