REFLECTIONS: Celebrate the little things each week

Did you know that there’s a World’s Best Friend Week?

Well, neither did I.

So, after receiving a very neat e-mail from a friend of mine regarding this special holiday, I decided I do a very simple check and make sure the date is correct.

It’s now been three hours. I’ve Googled. I’ve Sniped. I’ve hit Ask.com and I’ve search all known holidays.

Simple?

Ha!

Let’s just take the February of this year!

Did you know that the first week of February was “Dump Your Significant Jerk” week … followed by the second week of none other than “National Flirting” week (which kind of makes sense to me!).

And that February was the “National Blah Buster Month?

… As well as “Return Shopping Carts to the Supermarket” Month?

… AND “The National Caffeine Addiction Awareness” month?

Oh yeah, and the second week of February was also “Random Acts of Kindness Week.”

So, as I see it … you can dump your significant other … if he/she’s a jerk … on the first week of February and then you can start flirting around the second week of February … if you’re so inclined … or if you’ve had too much coffee, which you shouldn’t because it’s caffeine addition awareness month … and since the whole month is a blah buster month… then it only makes sense as a random act of kindness to go the supermarket and finally return that shopping card you “borrowed” three years ago.

Whew! I can’t believe I said that!

Gee, you could plan your whole life around which week it is … and that doesn’t even account for the day holidays, which, incidentally allows you to eat through the month!

What’re you talking about, you ask?

Feb. 1 was National Baked Alaska Day … oh yeah, and also National Bubble Gum Day. (Ooops, sorry … forgot Skippy Peanut Butter Day.)

Feb. 2 was California Kiwi Fruit Day (And, as we know … Groundhog Day … which, I understand is somewhat tasty!)

Feb. 3 was National Carrot Day and Feb. 4 was National Stuffed Mushroom Day.

Feb. 5 was National Popcorn Day (as well as National Disaster Day!)

Feb. 6 was National Frozen Yogurt Day, followed by none other that National Fettuccine Alfredo Day on Feb. 7.

We give our stomach a rest on Feb. 8 because it’s National Fly a Kite Day and we come back on Feb. 9 with the National Bagel & Lox Day.

Feb. 10 we don’t eat as it’s National Umbrella Day and the 11th, our stomach is still resting with National Satisfied Staying Single Day … which kinda makes sense (I think) because that’s during National Flirting Week.

Feb. 12 we do a double whammy with National Pancake Day as well as National Plum Pudding Day.

Feb. 13 we fix up what we screwed up on Feb. 11 and make a change during National Get A Different Name Day.

Feb. 14 was obvious … candy time during National Valentine’s Day and for those of you who forgot, you can send them gumdrops on Feb. 15 during National Gumdrop Day … if you’re so inclined.

Now, since Feb. 16 was National Do A Grouch a Favor Day, you might as well send your grouch some almonds because … you’re right … it’s National Almond Day!

Feb. 17 was National My Way Day, so you can do whatever you want in preparation for Feb. 18, which was National Crab Stuffed Flounders Day.

On Feb. 19, one celebrates Cherry Coke’s birthday (1985) and, if you’re so inclined, you can choke it down with a bit of chocolate … as it was also National Chocolate Mint Day (Yuck!).

Feb. 20 we’re back in the saddle again with the International Pancake Day as well as the National Cherry Pie Day. (A sidebar here … thank goodness the FIRST toothpick entered the American scene here on Feb. 20, 1872!)

Feb. 21 we celebrated the National Sticky Bun Day and the 22nd was National Chili Day, followed on the 23rd with National Banana Bread Day AND the International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day … if you’re into crunch treats! Oh yeah, before I forget, the Tootsie Roll was first introduced on this day  in 1896.

Feb. 24 was National Tortilla Day, and thank goodness for Feb. 25 … that was National Let’s All Eat Right Day. Ha!

Feb. 26 was National Pistachio Day, followed on the 27th, which was National No Brainer Day and finally, the 28th with National Inconvenience Yourself Day … as WELL as National Public Sleeping Day, which you would need if you made it this far!

Well … as I’m on a roll, let’s take a gander at March!

First of all, it’s important to note that March is National Frozen Food Month AND (much more importantly) National Peanut Butter Month!

Today … which is March 1 (while I’m writing this piece) is National Pig Day … so I certainly hope you remembered to hug a pig! Personally, I forgot the pig and pigged out on peanut butter … as it’s also National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day.

Now, March 2 is important: it’s Old Stuff Day … guess that takes in people from my era! BUT … the important thing is it’s followed my March 3, which is … (drum roll please!) … If Pets Had Thumbs Day! Good grief! (But if you can’t figure that one out, you can still celebrate March 3 as it’s also I Want To Be Happy Day.)

March 4 is Holy Experiment Day … and I don’t think I’d better make a comment on this one … and just slide into March 5 and do my bit to celebrate National Multiple Personality Day!

March 6, we can celebrate two ways: as National Frozen Food Day or National Dentist’s Day … followed on March 7’s National Crown Roast of Pork Day.

Got a problem with where we’re going? Well … you can take it all out on March 8 as that’s National Be Nasty Day … and if you’re in a real rut, just wait a day because the 9th is National Panic Day! OMG!

Now, March 10 is kinda calm as it’s only National Name Pride Day … and the 11th is National Worship of Tools Day, and finally on the 12th comes Girl Scout Day and Plant a Flower Day (must be a southern thingy as we’re Zone 5!).

March 13 is National Ear Muff Day and is followed by National Potato Chip Day on the 14th, and on the Ides of March (the 15th) you can take your choice: National Dumbstruck Day or National Everything You Think is Wrong Day … hmmm, difficult choice there!

March 16 is National Everything You Do is Right Day as well as National Freedom of Information Day … interesting to have those two together!

March 17 is National Submarine Day and St. Patrick’s Day, and the 18th (I love this!) is jointly held as National Goddess of Fertility Day and National Supreme Sacrifice Day!

The 19th of March is National Poultry Day and is aptly followed on the 20th with National Extraterrestrial Abductions Day!

National Fragrance Day is the 21st and the 22nd is National Goof Off Day, followed by the National Near Miss Day on the 23rd and one of my favorites: National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day on the 24th! The 25th is National Waffle Day and the 26th is aptly called National Make Up Your Own Holiday Day!

The 27th of March is National “Joe” Day and the 28th is National Something on a Stick Day … and after all that, the 29th is National Smoke and Mirrors Day.

We end the month with National I AM in Control Day on the 30th and a cute duo on the 31st with National Bunson Burner Day and National Clam on the Half Shell Day!

Oh yeah … I’m still hunting for World’s Best Friend Week … and since I’ve overused my space allotment, guess I’ll have to share that neat e-mail next week!

Have a super National Name Pride Day Today … and, before I forget … if you can’t figure out how to celebrate that … remember that the second week of March is also National Crochet Week … AND National Bubble Gum Week … and to that, I CAN relate …

Happy bubbles …
