Ferris Community Summer Band announces concert schedule

BIG RAPIDS — Having brought the Big Rapids and Ferris State University communities together through music for nearly 50 years, the Ferris Community Summer Band announces its annual summer concert series.

The 47th annual summer series kicks off with a performance next week at the Mecosta County Old Jail. The band consists of high school, middle school and college students, working adults and retired people.

All six performances will be at 7 p.m., and are free and open to the public. The band will perform on the following dates:

  • Wednesday at the Old Jail;
  • June 13 at the Big Rapids Band Shell;
  • June 14 during the Mecosta County Medical Center Auxiliary’s Community Block Party at Centennial Park;
  • June 20 at the Big Rapids Band Shell;
  • June 27 at The Castle in Canadian Lakes; and
  • July 3 at the Big Rapids Band Shell.

In the case of inclement weather, alternate locations for the concerts scheduled at the Old Jail and band shell will be held at the Big Rapids First United Methodist Church, located at 304 Elm St.

Each concert supports local community endeavors, such as the roof replacement project at the Old Jail, the MCMC Auxiliary’s annual community block party and the City of Big Rapids annual Band Shell Concert Summer Series.

“We’re playing at the different parks and locations in the area as a way for people to get to know the parks we have in town,” said Dr. Scott Cohen, Ferris bands director. “We’re also playing at The Castle in Canadian Lakes as a way for us to branch out and make (residents) there a welcome part of our community.”

Local orchestral musicians are encouraged to participate in the band. In order to perform in any of the concerts, musicians are asked to attend rehearsals, which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. the Monday before each performance in Room 108 in Ferris’ Music Center Building.

Musicians are invited to perform in as many concerts as they can, and do not have to commit to the whole season.

For more information about participating in the band, contact Cohen at (231) 591-2484 or rscohen@ferris.edu, or attend the next rehearsal.
