PAT HEETER: Big Rapids needs a district library, new building

TO THE EDITOR:

After reading the Pioneer report (June 5) on the Big Rapids City commission vote on the library, I realized there still is hope that Big Rapids will have a new library. I read the letters by Carlleen Rose and Rita Conrard.

I think all of us who have felt hopeless need to speak to our mayor and commissioners, friends and neighbors about the importance of an appropriate library community center in Big Rapids.

I was awed by the new Morton Township Library. How did they do it? Great cooperation is my thought. This issue in Big Rapids was studied … the tax payers paid for research … and we were stymied.

Instead of moving forward with all the evidence, we are moving backward. Good money is being invested in a losing situation.

All manner of media is needed to meet the needs of the community of learners – young and old. For the first time in my life, I have met a library staff that makes me feel like going to the library. Then I went to the Morton Township Library and walked into a library that made me feel uplifted by the structure as well as staff.

What do we need? A district library and an appropriate building. Our library is used by young and old from all over the area. Let’s make it efficient, practical and, above all, NOT A MONEY PIT.

Increase taxes . That’s how it was done. If everyone is willing to increase taxes, a new library works. I believe you must look at what a library will look like in the future and not what it looks like today. Who will use the library in the future and what must they look like. Technology will not slow down.
