JIM CREES: Accusation adds to hysteria

Bachmann calls for background checks on Muslim Clinton aide and a fellow representative

I simply must send a shout out to the people of Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District – the folks in St. Cloud and throughout Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, Wright, Anoka and Washington counties.

God bless y’all.

You keep voting Rep. Michele Bachmann into office – and by enough of a margin to show the world you actually meant to do this! Rep. Bachmann beat her opponent in the last election by a substantial difference – 52 percent to 39 percent of the vote.

I guess the big question is: Are you folks serious??? Have you listened to her over the past few years?

It’s not that she leaves bleeding-heart liberals like me gasping for breath just about every time she opens her mouth. Even her comrades and colleagues in Washington have taken to wondering what the heck she is doing.

Most recently, Bachmann and a collection of her admirers in Congress demanded there be an investigation into a possible Islamic infiltration into the highest levels of government.

Scary stuff. Oooooooooooo … those Muslim bogeymen are trying to take over.

The suspect of choice this time around was Huma Abedin – an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Bachmann and her fellows claimed Abedin should be checked out since there was some potential for a connection to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Abedin has been working with Clinton for years, and has already been checked out by the most stringent vetting process before ever getting her security clearance. She’s been looked at not because she was specifically a Muslim, but because she was heading into a job that demanded a need for a high level security clearance.

Bachmann’s demand to investigate Abedin wholly and solely because she is a Muslim drew outrage from all corners – including the GOP.

Sen. John McCain angrily declared from the Senate floor, “These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit, and they need to stop now.”

But, Bachmann not only persisted in her fear-mongering, she expanded her efforts casting aspersions on U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a congressman from her own state … and a Muslim.

Bachmann told fellow nut job Glenn Beck, “He has a long record of being associated with the Council on American-Islamic Relations and with the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Yowsuh!!!

Congressman Ellison, responded that Bachmann’s accusations were crazy, and totally false.

“I am not now, nor have I ever been, associated with the Muslim Brotherhood,” he said.

At this stage, GOP leader John Boehner joined the fray saying, “Accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.”

Indeed. Boehner also noted that he knew that Abedin was a person of “sterling character.”

Most telling, Bachmann’s own presidential campaign chief Ed Rollins said Bachmann’s demands were well beyond the pale of normalcy.

“Having worked for Congressman Bachmann’s campaign for president, I am fully aware that she sometimes has difficulty with her facts,” he said. Rollins added that Bachmann’s attacks on Abedin and Ellison were “vicious.”

What makes me wonder most, however, is the fact that people are just waking up to Bachmann’s loopiness.

She has been saying crazy stuff for years, but whenever someone questions her Bachmann retorts that people didn’t understand her point.

In fact, she now (without apologizing) claims her demand for an investigation into Abedin and Ellison has been “distorted.”

This from the lady who:

  • Apparently believes most American scientists endorse the theory of intelligent design saying, “There are hundreds and hundreds of scientists, many of them holding Nobel Prizes, who believe in intelligent design.” You would be hard pressed to find one or two reputable scientists who believe in intelligent design … if any;
  • Seriously thinks carbon dioxide is not a problem. After a scientific report on an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and its potentially dangerous affect on humanity, Bachmann responded, “Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn’t even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas;”
  • Thinks her buddy Glenn Beck should be drafted to bring about an end to the U.S. financial crisis, telling a group in South Carolina, “I think if we give Glenn Beck the numbers, he can solve this.” (Referring to the national debt.);
  • Said that half of all African-American pregnancies end in abortion, noting, “It is horrific to know that in the African American community, 50 percent of all African American pregnancies in the United States end in abortion, 50 percent. That is a genocide of African Americans of the United States. It should not be. There are Americans all across this country who would love to adopt African American babies, but they can’t because 50 percent of all African American pregnancies today are ending in abortion;’’ and
  • Suggested the Democrats were responsible for swine flu and later flu outbreaks saying, “I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out under another, then under another Democrat president, Jimmy Carter. I’m not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it’s an interesting coincidence.” (The swine flu outbreak actually took place when Republican Gerald Ford was president. Just saying!)

And more … and more … and more …

Now she wants an investigation into a person who already has been very, Very, VERY investigated and vetted, and a guy from the district that bumps up against her own and who was elected by the people of his district. That’s “elected” as in, they voted for him.

’Cause them Muslims are taking over!!!

Ah, Michele!

You’re just … too cool.
