Mohawks compete in WMVOA invite

Morley Stanwood competes against top class A and B schools during Saturday invitational

EAST KENTWOOD — The Morley Stanwood volleyball team held its own against some of the top competition in the state during Saturday’s WMVOA Invite.

The Mohawks went 2-3 on the afternoon during the tournament that featured 16 class A and seven class B schools, while Morley Stanwood was the only class C school in attendance.

Morley Stanwood opened with a loss to Jenison (25-20, 25-20) followed by a loss to Grandville (25-21, 25-14). The Mohawks closed pool play with a 26-24, 25-22 win over Kenowa Hills.

In bracket play, Morley Stanwood scored a 27-25, 25-23 win over Byron Center, before falling to Hudsonville in the second round of play, 25-21, 27-25.

Morley Stanwood coach Matt Kozuch said he was pleased with his team’s effort against some of the top volleyball programs in the state.

“Although you’re usually not ever happy going 2-3, it was a huge win for us to be on an equal level with a lot of those bigger schools and top programs,” he said.

Kayla Rosman led the Mohawks with 39 kills, while Mekayla Carey added 31.

Sam Carey had 42 digs to lead Morley Stanwood, while Brett Chesebro added 41 and Rosman contributed 40.

Lindsey Veersma led the way with 45 assists, while Andi Paulson had 30 assists, to go with seven blocks and seven aces. Mekayla Carey led the Mohawks with 15 blocks.

Morley Stanwood is in action again on Tuesday when it travels to

Lakeview.
