Ferris hockey ties RPI

TROY, N.Y. — The Ferris State hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie with RPI to conclude the opening weekend of play Saturday.

The Bulldogs dropped the opener 3-1 on Friday.

The Engineers scored late in the first period on a power-play goal by Jacob Laiberte for the only goal in the first period.

Ferris State answered 39 seconds into the second period as Garrett Thompason found the back of the net from a pass by Kyle Bonis. The Bulldogs then would take a 2-1 lead midway through the third period as Brandon Anselmini tallied his first collegiate goal with Simon Denis and Bonis earning assists.

RPI, however, struck back with a goal of its own less than a minute later to even the game as Laliberte scored his second of the night.

Sophomore CJ Motte recorded 21 saves in net for the

Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs held a slim 24-23 edge in total shots with 11 coming in the second period alone. The Engineers had a team-high eight in period two and posted a narrow 5-2 edge in scoring chances in the overtime session.

RPI cashed in on one of its four power play opportunities while the Bulldogs were not able to convert in two tries before a crowd of 2,779 fans at the Houston Field House.

Ferris State is in action again this weekend when it will host Mercyhurst in a two-game non-conference series. Face off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights.

Friday night will see a special banner raising ceremony to celebrate the Bulldogs historic achievements from last season, which included winning the Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and make a trip in the title game of the Frozen Four in Tampa Bay.
