Karl Linebaugh spent a week at baseball fantasy camp

BIG RAPIDS — In 2004, diehard Detroit Tigers fan Karl Linebaugh took the trip of a lifetime. He spent seven days with members of the 1984 World Series Champion Tigers at fantasy baseball camp in Lakeland, Fla.

Linebaugh, regional president of Chemical Bank, shared meals with the baseball greats, learned how to improve his playing and even played in a game against the championship team.

“My favorite part was being able to play baseball, being around the Tiger facility and being around many of my heroes,” Linebaugh said. “I actually sat next to Frank Tanana on the flight down to Lakeland and talked to him for a bit. Alan Trammell addressed us at a banquet that night, but had to leave because the next day they signed Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez — (Trammell) wasn’t going to be part of the camp because he was the manager of the team at the time.

“We watched the Super Bowl that night. It was a thrill for me to look over at the other table and see Al Kaline, Jack Morris, Darrell Evans, Alan Trammell and many of my heroes watching the game. I got them all to sign baseballs; I took home a number of autograph baseballs.”

Throughout the week, eight teams played against each other in a “regular season” and “playoffs.” They closed out the week with a game against players from the 1984 Tigers.

Linebaugh is excited to see the Tigers return to the World Series and predicts a Detroit victory.
