Bulldogs drop opener to Lakers, 4-1

SAULT STE. MARIE — Lake Superior State scored three goals in 57 seconds en route to a 4-1 victory over Ferris State in the series opener Friday night.

The Bulldogs are now 3-4-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Lakers are now 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the second period on Justin DeMartino’s second goal of the season.

The tally was assisted by Cory Kane and Simon Denis.

But the Lakers responded with three goals in 57 seconds to take a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission. It started with a goal by Kellan Lain with less than a minute remaining in the second period, followed 13 seconds later by a goal by Buddy Robinson.

Robinson then concluded the scoring frenzy, scoring with two seconds left in the period.

Lake Superior State would add one more goal, by Nick McParland on an empty-netter for the final

outcome.

The contest saw only five penalties with the Lakers getting whistled for three penalties to just two for the Bulldogs. Neither team scored with the man advantage.

Ferris State’s CJ Motte made 23 saves in a losing effort. Lake Superior State netminder Kevin Murdock stopped 31 of 32 shots in gaining the victory.

The two teams wrap up the weekend series Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie. Face off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
