SUE ROSHAK: Thank you for helping the homeless in our community

TO THE EDITOR:

A little more than 10 months ago a small group of concerned citizens came together to explore the need for a homeless shelter in our area. Once the decision was made to step up to the challenge, we never looked back or lost hope.

On Jan. 7, the door to Our Brothers Keeper Shelter opened. On that first night, five people came looking for a warm, safe, welcoming place to spend the night.

Much of what we have been able to do for our guests, and provide for our guests, has been made possible by the outpouring of community support. Caring people have filled our cupboards with linens, clothes, books, toiletries, food and cleaning supplies.

Televisions, refrigerators, kitchen appliances and dishes have also been donated. And the list goes on.

Local churches have provided hot meals each night for our guests. Restaurants have provided food and kitchen needs. Local businesses have graciously offered myriad services when needed. We have been wonderfully surprised and blessed by the outpouring of support; materially, monetarily and in the 90-plus people who have signed up to help where needed.

It has been awesome to watch God work in the hearts of people in our community. We thank you! Our guests thank you! We are blessed to live in such a great community.

At the present time we are hosting 17 people. We have families with children (currently ages 1 through 10 years), college students, adults and couples. Our guests are most appreciative of what the community is doing for them. They are very grateful to have been welcomed in by Our Brothers Keeper shelter. And they express their thankfulness in many ways each day.

Our Brothers Keeper shelter is open 24/7. If anyone would like to come and tour our “home,” you are more than welcome. Our Brothers Keeper is a miracle in progress – come and be part of it! We always need volunteers for both daytime and nighttime.

Thank you to each and every one who has given of their time or their resources to be able to provide a warm, safe, welcoming, place for 17 (and counting) people to lay their head at night!
