REFLECTIONS: Writing on my terms and in my words

I love the term FYI (for your information).

So this VERY short column, (for me) is an FYI to all you characters (I say that with a modicum of admiration) who are reading this.

I’ve made a decision.

I know, I know, but sometime I’ve got to figure out what I want to do with my life.

And I finally think I’ve figured it out — at least the writing part of it. I know I no longer want to be burdened with the necessity of turning out a Reflections column every week.

Why?

Because frankly it gets to be boring, and if it’s boring to me, it must be at least borderline boring to you as well.

I thoroughly enjoy being imaginative. I get a rush out of using whatever creative juices I have to develop a column and even, (every now and then) toss in a bit of humor.

But what I don’t like are those times when I don’t have the time to write due to other commitments and instead, use what I call “fill ins.”

“Fill ins” do just that: they fill space. And, when you MUST get a column out every week, it’s so very easy to slide and rather than being imaginative, just peruse your multitude of emails and pick one out in order to make that week’s deadline.

Now in all fairness, there have been a lot of you who have been incredibly helpful by shooting me emails I could use … or work off of … when I didn’t have anything written that could be called original.

You’ve saved my butt several times at the last minute when my editor was chasing my tail and bugging me (as he should) about where in blazes my column was hiding. And I thoroughly appreciate it.

But putting it frankly, that’s not the type of writing I enjoy producing.

It just isn’t me.

It lacks creativity … even though some I paraphrased could be considered quite entertaining. Plus, with the explosion of the social media scene, most of those emails have been around the block once or twice already … and sometimes more! Sooooooo, there’s not a lot of originality on that scene!

I’m not saying I won’t look through the myriad of emails I receive daily. I might even use one every now and then. But that’s it: ONLY every now and then. And ONLY if it really pushes my buttons.

So folks, that’s the way it’s going to be from now on. I gotta do it for my own sanity. It’s time to take the bull by its horn, hop in the saddle and prepare for the long ride.

In other words …

Yep! I’m going to continue my column. However from here on out it will be on my terms and in my words.

I’ve had a great ride. But if you don’t see me every week, know I haven’t been heaved off the critter, but have chosen a more satisfying way to dismount.

And know I’ll be clamoring back in the saddle in another week or so.

I PROMISE that … cuz it’s a huge turn on to me.

Besides — I love a good ride!

Thanks for understanding.

Congratulations. I understand and was always amazed at how you could come up with such great columns. I can’t imagine having to produce something interesting weekly. I would not be able to sleep nights. I am happy to see that you have not given up.
