Roses & Thorns

ROSES

… to all those involved in bringing the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer center project at Spectrum Reed City Hospital to a successful conclusion, a HUGE bouquet of roses. There were and are many, Many, MANY people involved — from fundraisers to donors. Individuals, groups, and organizations donated as best they could — from tens of thousands of dollars, to the proverbial Widow’s Mite. And every gift — both large and small — was a blessing. Thank you to each and every person who took on whatever role in this inspirational community project. It is hard to even imagine how this cancer center will affect the lives of people throughout the extended west-central Michigan “neighborhood.” Again, thank you.

… to all the walkers, joggers, strollers, donors, and support team members who took part in the 2013 Mecosta County Relay for Life. This is simply another example of how the people of this county come together to give what they can in the continuing search for a cure for cancer. The 24-hour Relay walk can be hard and tedious, but so many people don’t hesitate take the challenge for this amazing cause. Thank you.

… to the Tuba Bach team. Thanks for another great series of fine music offered in a comfortable and entertaining format. Good show. We’re looking forward to more.

… to all the folks at the Big Rapids Antique Farm and Power Club for the hard work they do offering an Education Day for local young people. What a great way to make sure students and staff at area schools don’t forget the roots of agriculture in our predominantly rural community. A great job by all the many volunteers. Thanks.

THORNS

… to all those folks throughout the area — young and old, students and residents alike — who think that they will be the first person in the history of mankind to drive carefully and in full control of their faculties while being drunk as a skunk.

The police and court reports seem to be filling up more and more with reports of drunken driving and behavior, rather than giving any evidence that people are learning a lesson and designating a sober driver to take them home. For gosh sake, if you drink, don’t drive.
