MECOSTA COUNTY — The local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma recently awarded $1,300 in grants to 10 teachers.

DKG is an educational honorary for female educators that distributes annual grants for new teachers to use in their classrooms.

Grants were awarded to Kayla Cousineau, of Big Rapids Middle School; Bridget Curtice, Chippewa Hills Intermediate School; Andrew Defever, Big Rapids High School; Virgeline Fredrick, Mosaic School; Jenny Knopf, Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District’s Education Center; Carol Noreen, Crossroads Charter Academy elementary school; Jill Rehkopf, BRMS; Kristin Yates, CCA middle/high school; Jennifer VanderLugt, MOISD Great Start Preschool in Reed City; and Angie Zeneberg, MOISD Great Start at Eastwood Early Education Center in Big Rapids.

Jeanette Fleury, president of the DKG organization, also announced three of the DKG members were provided with grants for community projects. These projects are aimed at elementary, middle school or high school students.

Marcy Jaques, of Ferris State University, is working on a project that assists high school students with the transition to college or a career. The project is referred to as College Awareness and Transition Supports (CATS) program. The award will provide money to purchase creative materials and supplies to help students develop appropriate social skills.

Ruth Reeds, a Voca Lyrica member, received an award to purchase music for the children’s choir she started in September. The Big Rapids Area Youth Choir is under the direction of Jeanna Caputo and is assisted by Reeds.

Julie Tilmann, of Artworks, earned a grant for the Art Immersion Day available to fourth-grade students at any of the schools in Big Rapids. All students who participate can tour the art gallery, participate in dance, music and create art work.

DKG aims to encourage women in education through the fall grants for new teachers and spring scholarships for Ferris students who are pursuing a degree in education.
