LEROY — In the village of LeRoy, owners of a local business pride themselves on the convenience they provide to community members while giving a warm, friendly greeting to those who walk through the door.

Henry’s General Store owners Henry and Holly Schlulser took over the business 15 years ago, love every minute and have a good relationship with the customers they see on a daily or weekly basis.

“We’ve enjoyed it immensely,” said Henry Schlusler. “We love the people in the neighborhood, we enjoy the area, we love getting involved in the school system. It’s just a nice community to be involved in.”

The Schlulsers sat down with The Pioneer to discuss a number of aspects about the business.

THE PIONEER: Give a brief explanation about the business.

SCHLUSLERS: We are a convenience store. Our main line is liquor. We also have beer, a small line of groceries and a deli case, a little gift room and we sell a lot of pop.

How was the business established?

SCHLUSLERS: We’ve been here 15 years next month. The business itself has been here for decades. It was known as Larson’s at one time and when we bought it, it was LeRoy Grocery and we renamed it to Henry’s General Store.

What sets the store apart from other similar businesses in the area?

SCHLUSLERS: We have the only liquor license in town. We have a lottery machine. We pride ourselves on the convenience we provide for the customers. We stay open on Easter, Thanksgiving and other holidays. We’ve been able to help people out with their holiday dinners. We pride ourselves on keeping our prices low.

What has been the most popular item in the store?

SCHLUSLERS: Monster and Mt. Dew, but it’s pretty spread out. We sell a good balance of adult beverages, pop, cigarettes and anything people need for the convenience.

How do you give back to the community?

SCHLUSLERS: A lot of advertising and donations with the schools. We’re big supporters of the sports programs, the band and the Destination Imagination program. The schools ask and we try to help them out when we can. We’re also involved with the Methodist church and we’re on a couple of committees. We love LeRoy, so we do what we can.

What is the best part about working in this type of business?

SCHLUSLERS: It’s interesting being our own bosses. We’re always here because we live above the store. We have a lot of freedom.
