FSU men’s tennis picks up first dual win

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University men’s tennis team picked up its first dual win of the season on Saturday as FSU rolled to a 7-2 non-league triumph over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldogs swept the doubles round while building a 3-0 lead heading into singles competition and then managed to take four of the six singles flights.

Ferris State received wins in singles action from Laurent Galarneau at the top flight along with victories at the third, fourth and fifth spots in the lineup from Laurent Mailloux, Otto Keresztes and Jose Calero, respectively.

All six singles sets were determined in straight-sets and the closest doubles score came at the number two flight where Mailloux and Keresztes picked up an 8-5 triumph. Galarneau was also a double-winner on the day.

With the win, the Bulldogs now own a 1-1 mark to date this spring in dual action.

FSU returns to competition on Friday as the Bulldogs open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on the road against the Tiffin Dragons in Tiffin, Ohio. Match time is set for 3 p.m.

Ferris State will then visit Ohio Dominican on Saturday and Findlay on Sunday in league action.

FSU women’s tennis falls in spring opener

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University women’s tennis squad played its first match of the spring season, but came out on the short end of a 5-3 non-conference decision against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on Saturday inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The visiting Tigers posted a pair of doubles wins in taking an early 2-1 advantage in the match and then claimed the victory by winning three singles matches.

Ferris State’s lone doubles win came from the pairing of Janie Sell and Sydney Berens at the number two flight in the lineup by an 8-6 score.

In singles action, Olivet Nazarene took the top two spots, but Ferris State answered with wins at the third and fourth flights. ONU claimed the sixth position with the fifth flight going unfinished.

Both Sell and Berens were double winners on the day as they pulled out singles triumphs at the third and fourth flights, respectively.

Ferris State fell to 8-10 overall this season with the loss.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a non-conference home match against Davenport today, starting at 6 p.m. in Big Rapids.
