In June, the Pioneer went to Death Valley and Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho, with Sally McCafferty and Margaret Ross on their 7,000-mile road trip to Bend, Ore. to visit their sister/daughter, Pixie Ross.

They visited 13 national parks and monuments on this “black rocks” trip and learned many of the parks were sites of volcanic activity as recently as 2,000 years ago, and one 97 years ago. They also learned astronauts trained at Craters before their moon landing. (Courtesy photo)
