FSU hockey senior inks deal with South Carolina Stingrays

BIG RAPIDS — Ferris State University senior defenseman Jason Binkley, who recently completed his collegiate hockey career by leading the Bulldogs to a second-straight Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five appearance, has signed a professional hockey contract with the East Coast Hockey League’s South Carolina Stingrays.

The official announcement was made Wednesday by Stingrays’ head coach and director of operations Spencer Carbery. The three-time Kelly Cup Champions are an affiliate of both the NHL’s Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins.

Binkley, 22, finished his Bulldog career with 68 points on eight goals and 60 assists as a four-year letterwinner. He appeared in 156 collegiate games and helped lead the Bulldogs to two conference titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2012 national championship game. He also produced 174 career blocked shots and finished with a plus-16 rating.

The Powell, Ohio, native skated two seasons in the junior hockey ranks with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League and the Jersey Hitmen of the EJHL prior to his collegiate career.

Binkley will join the Stingrays, who open a season-high seven-game road trip on Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:35 p.m. at U.S. Bank Arena in
Cincinnati, Ohio.

A record number of former Ferris State skaters have signed professional contracts over the past two years.
