BIG RAPIDS — Raven Brewing will feature sidewalk seating, according to a position paper Big Rapids Department of Neighborhood Services Director Mark Sweppenheiser will deliver to the Big Rapids City Commission on Monday.

Chuck and Connie Freiberg, owners of the location originally named Big Rapids Brewing Company, are proposing two seating areas separated by a 6-foot pedestrian travel zone in front of the 121 N. Michigan Ave. building.

The plan includes one fenced in area to extend 6 feet out from the front of the former Pepper’s Cafe and Deli  building and a second 5-foot wide fenced area that will be up against the Michigan Avenue curb. A 6-foot walkway will separate the two areas. The city is requiring the street-side seating area be removed during the winter.

The commission approved an ordinance in 2008 which allows restaurants to serve alcoholic beverages within a designated, fenced-in area.

Other items on Monday’s agenda include, commissioners recognizing Friday, April 24, as GFWC Federation Day in honor General Federation of Women’s Clubs—Big Rapids and in celebration of the organization’s 125th anniversary.

Also, commissioners plan to honor city residents Mark Warba,  Robert Stanton, Gordon and Patricia VanDyke and Mark Viel with Department of Park and Recreation Citizen Recognition Awards for their valuable contributions to the Riverwalk, and Dave Murray will be recognized for work and contributions towards Mitchell Creek Park.

The city commission meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20, at City Hall, 226 N. Michigan Ave.
