Image (84)BIG RAPIDS BLACKSMITH: Business was booming for local shops in Big Rapids back in 1913, when George D. Stevens’ blacksmith shop could turn out any sized horseshoe needed, and clamps, hooks and specialty tools as well. Stevens (at the anvil) was assisted in his efforts by Ernest Fridell (at left.) The two worked in a cavernous space with wooden plank floors. Plank floors? With two forges turning raw material into white-hot wrought iron??  One has to wonder what OSHA would have to say about conditions!? Back in the Day photos hope to encourage an awareness of the rich history of Big Rapids and surrounding communities and offer a record of local history before it is forgotten.
