JOHN HOLDSWORTH: Proposal 1 is the same old song

To the Editor,

It is said that insanity can be defined as doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. When I consider Proposal 1 in the upcoming election, insanity seems to be an appropriate term.

Those who might remember the ballot proposal to enable the Michigan lottery will remember the promises that the lottery would provide all sorts of funding for schools and they found a way to walk around their promises. This proposal seems to be no different.

A song from that time frame, “Ball of Confusion” by the Temptations, said it best, “The politician says more taxes will solve everything and the band plays on.”

We have heard the same song and dance for far too long.

A long time ago, a politically astute individual told me when there are proposals to increase taxes, the budget items such as more assistants, or maybe like a new Senate building, are put in the budget and then those items such as police, fire personnel or roads (as is the dangling carrot of this proposal) have no money to fund them.

Proposal 1 is a tax and fee increase laden with tax breaks for special interests and the backs of the taxpayers are straining badly.

We have been told this is the only way to deal with our dangerous roads. The commercials would have you believe the bridges are so unsafe that they are about to fall. If this were true, those would be closed already. That takes me back to the days of the bond proposal for the new high school. Just look what a fine job the charter school has done with the facility that was said to be unfit for our children.

We are being fed the same old song and dance, more taxes will solve everything. Vote no on Proposal 1.

Sincerely,

John Holdsworth
