BARB MORAWA: Writer glad Prop. 1 failed

To the editor,

I voted against Proposal 1 and am glad it was defeated.

I’m also tired of politicians, after defeat, blaming us, the public, if the roads don’t get fixed.

I’ve lived in Michigan all my life and they’ve been fixing the roads for the last 50 years that I remember. Funny, they still aren’t fixed. Maybe because after politicians, contractors and lobbyists (I thought bribery was illegal?) line their pockets there will never be enough to fix the roads. (What was it stated in a published breakdown of the proposal, $700 million off the top goes to special interests?)

Here’s a novel idea. Why doesn’t the senate figure out a way to use the huge amounts of money already promised/collected to do the job instead of crafting new ways to rake our pockets and not deliver? Then, enforce standards so contractors cannot use sub-standard materials that don’t last.

I can but dream.

Same with education. Millage after millage is passed (not to mention the promise of education funds to get the lottery legalized) and as far as I can tell all that’s been done is line politicians’ and union officials’ pockets.

Curriculum has been gutted. Each graduating class after the next are more ignorant than the one before. (Yes, of course there are the handful of students who excel — who actually have a goal and seek the education to fulfill it).

A few more classes out and, since cursive has now gone by the wayside, they can go back to making an “X” on the signature line!

Published report after report about students that can’t find their own state on a map. The list goes on. That’s probably hopeful for politicians. The more ignorant they (the voters) are, the more tax bills like Proposal 1 they can deceive them into voting for, if the people even bother voting at all!

Some folks have warned about the danger of a one-party political system. It’s just about here, as both sides of the aisle are progressive! They just let us think we have two parties.

Keep your guard up. Congress will be back with even more convoluted bills!

Thanks, Pioneer for letting us in on all the bull in the bill. Keep that coming, too. We need all the help we can get to know what the politicians are trying to deceive us into when we go to the polls!
