Morley Stanwood baseball aims for third straight district title

MORLEY — Morley Stanwood’s baseball team has won two Division 3 district titles in a row.

It begins its quest for a third straight championship at noon on Saturday against White Cloud in a district semifinal matchup at Kent City High School.

“We’re going to take things one inning at a time, concentrate, execute and hopefully it will be a recipe for success,” Mohawks’ coach Josh Bull said.

Morley Stanwood’s tournament run
ended in the regional final last season, a 4-0 loss to Muskegon Oakridge.

The Mohawks (24-8) beat the Indians in all four meetings this season, but Bull said that will not change his team’s approach.

“We just have to come out, make the routine play, hit the ball and be smart on the basepaths,” he said.

Junior Lucas Elenbaas will get the start on the mound.

“Lucas has been one of our most consistent pitchers,” Bull said. “He works ahead of hitters, and with him on the mound, we feel we have the opportunity to set our defense up how we’d like. If he gets in trouble, we have other arms that can come in and get the job done, too.”

With Chase Huntey, Jon Lagendyk, Dayne Edgerly, Mike Carey and Elenbaas at the top and middle of the order, Bull said it is important to jump on the opposition early. Each of them has batted over .400 for most of the season.

“We’re playing for one run first and then we’ll go from there,” Bull said. “One key in the postseason is to get off to a hot start. It really gives you an advantage. If we get a runner on, we’re going to look to advance him right away.”

If Morley Stanwood advances, it will play the winner of Kent City-Newaygo later on Saturday.
