DAVID WOOFTER: Heroes on and off the court

To the editor:

Maybe professional sports personalities today should take a cue from our local high school athletes.

With Deflate-gate, assaults of women, drug use and all the other “what-about-me” activities so prevalent in professional sports headlines, the student-athletes on the Morley-Stanwood volleyball team along with Coach Robin Kozuch not only practice and perform well both on court and in the classroom, they also make time to reach out to the community and to others who are in need.

The girls host an annual fund raiser for local charities. This year they raised $1,000 and donated it to Sharon Woofter who has Stage 4 colon cancer. Currently, she is undergoing clinical trials in Ann Arbor.

Sharon travels weekly to receive treatments. The cost of travel and lodging is substantial and significant. The money these girls have raised is a welcomed blessing to a woman who is fighting for her life.

To put it in volleyball terms “The girls really killed it!” and “Served up a powerful win” in the game of life!

School administrators, teachers, athletes, coaches, and this community have a lot to cheer about with the way these Lady Mohawks conduct themselves. These girls offer an inspiring blueprint to how true sportsmen and women should behave on and off the field so the fans will truly have something to cheer about.

 Well done, girls. Well done!!!
