The two met in West Virginia while both working for Action for Appalachian Youth, a Kennedy/Johnson poverty programs of the 1960s.

They married on May 14, 1966, at Beverly Hills Methodist Church in Huntington, West Virginia.

Bill wanted to return to University of Michigan to work on a doctorate, so the couple moved to Ann Arbor. In 1970, they came north and lived for a few years in a log cabin. The cabin had no running water, but they moved in anyway with their 2-year-old son Jesse and 6-month-old son Jacob.

In 1974, they adopted their daughter, Leah, and bought a 40-acre farm just south and west of Reed City. They raised their kids there and took in 13 foster children.

Both of the Burmeisters have extended careers teaching and coaching. Bill still teaches at Ferris State University part-time, while Nancy does volunteer work and officiates track meets.

In addition to the couple’s three children, they have 11 grandchildren: Estefan, Ameer, Jessica, Emily, Hannah, Oliver, Rick, Mack, Luke, Sariah and Ariella.
