LEROY — Pine River’s soccer team made its season debut on Friday at home with a 9-1 loss to Kalkaska.

The Blazers built a 6-0 lead at halftime and opened the second half with a score for a  7-0 advantage. Senior Collin Jarvis, a midfielder, who transferred from Cadillac, scored Pine River’s only goal early in the half to make it 7-1.

The Blazers scored the next two goals including the ninth one with four minutes left in regulation to end the game.

“It was a pass that actually curved into the net,” Bucks coach Jenny Hoaglund said of Jarvis’ tally.

Pine River had scrimmaged Reed City on Thursday.

“It’s definitely not the way you want to start the season,” Hoaglund said. “But it’s not horrible for the first game, I suppose. There’s some good things that came out of it and we saw some things we need to work on. Now we work on those things and move forward.”

Ball handling skills are critical, Hoaglund said.

“The kids have got to learn some positions,” she said. “I have some kids playing in positions they maybe have never played before or are not comfortable playing. Once they are comfortable it will be better.”

It also was the season opener for Kalkaska, which netted two goals apiece from Micah Miller and Kyle McDowell. Cole Nabozny was the winning goalkeeper.

“I was really happy,” Kalkaska coach Wes Basset said. “I thought we started off a little slow then we got into the groove 10 minutes into the game. As the game went on, we started getting better. We need to work on better possession, We definitely can control the ball better.”
