BIG RAPIDS — Grace White continues to show her skills for the Big Rapids volleyball team as the season heads into its final weeks.

The Cardinals have added two straight wins over Reed City in recent weeks and White has been playing a critical role with her hitting talents.

White, a senior, is in her third varsity season, and again is a force at the net for the Cardinals.

“I’d like to work on more of my serving his year and have more aces,” she said.

In a 3-0 win over Reed City Tuesday, the Big Rapids middle hitter had a strong serving night.

“I like how close (middle hitter) is to the setter,” White said after last Thursday’s non-league win over the same Reed City team. “I’m really close to my setter, Dakota Young. She’s one of my best friends. We’re always talking and having fun in the middle.”

White has been focusing on switching up and using different types of hits and indicated this factor has made her effective as a hitter.

She added she wants to improve on “her blocking and recognizing when to go to the blocks.”

First-year coach Chelsea Nelson has been impressed with White’s efforts.

“She’s stepped up as a leader,” Nelson said. “Being her senior year, she’s doing very well. She’s smart. She sees the court and knows when to hit hard and when to give a little less. She’s a great athlete. She has the drive to compete.”

The Cardinals have been focusing on improvement all season and recently improved to 2-5 in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division.

“We’re really young but we’re getting better all the time,” White said.

The Cardinals defeated Reed City in matches this week and last, avenging a loss to the Coyotes early in the season.

“They beat us earlier so it’s nice to come back and beat them,” White said. “It’s nice for morale.”

The Cardinals are home against Morley Stanwood Monday.

“We need to keep our communication up and not get down on ourselves,” White said. “We have so much talent.”
