BALDWIN — The firearm deer season continues through Nov. 30, but the 14 days after Nov. 15 are not quite like the opener.

Opening day remains a traditional date that may be cherished by hunters more than July 4, Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. Sportsmen can hunt deer in various ways from October though December. But firearm season remains Nov. 15-30 and Nov. 15 is a day like none other.

Getting a buck on Nov. 15 obviously makes it extremely special. Two hunters from the Detroit area make hunting in Lake County a tradition and they again had success on Nov. 15.

John and Robert Garner stopped by Lake-Osceola State Bank on Tuesday morning to show off John’s 10-point buck he shot earlier in the day.

“These brothers have been hunting in Lake County for nearly 50 years,” bank assistant vice president Lori K. Braginton said. “They were pretty proud of this buck.”

There’s a reason, Braginton pointed out, why hunters such as the Garners, make the long trip to this area for Nov. 15.

“They are a perfect example of the hunters that come from the city to enjoy our beautiful area,” she said. “We enjoyed talking to them (Tuesday) morning.”

The DNR has announced dates for the 2017 hunting season. The Liberty Hunt, featuring youth and hunts with disabilities, will be Sept. 17. Early antlerless firearm season is Sept. 16-17. Another independence hunt, featuring hunters with disabilities, is set for Oct. 19-22 followed by archery season Oct. 1 to Nov. 14 and Dec. 1 to Jan. 1

Muzzleloading season is Dec. 2-11 this year in zones 1 and 2 and Dec. 2-18 in
Zone 3.
