Cardinals eager to play some football

BIG RAPIDS – The Big Rapids Cardinals are finishing their first week of practices, and players like Deion Jones are all set to get the job done.

Practices officially opened with helmets on Monday. Players could put on pads later.

It’s Jones senior season. He’s seen action at slotback. His role is obviously to pick up yards anyway he can.

“I’m really good at hitting cuts and I’m pretty fast,” he said.

Jones also hopes to help the Cardinals in the passing attack.

“I can get open whenever, and I can lose defenders,” he said. “I can get a lot of yards after contact with the ball.”

On defense, he’s at outside linebacker.

He’s at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, and figures he’s physical enough to make some hard hits. Jones has also been able to read where the ball is going.

He’s hoping for his best varsity season.

The Cardinals open at Cadillac on Aug. 24.

“We’re looking pretty good,” he said after Monday’s practice. “We have some younger guys and they’re picking it up, a lot better than we did last year. It’s definitely a smarter group.”

Jones did a lot of work on football and basketball to get ready for 2014-15.

Big Rapids coach Mike Selser talks to his team after a practice.
