LeRoy resident set for deer hunting

LEROY — Don Hillis spends a lot of time at the Saturday shoots hosted by the Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club.

But the LeRoy resident, who also belongs to the Reed City Sportsman Club, takes his grand-daughter, Alexis, with him on deer hunting rifle ventures during the season. The youth hunt was on Sept. 16-17.

“I have pictures of her sleeping in the deer shanty,” he smiled. “She has her hunter safety card. We had that taken care of the other day.”

Hillis owns land in the Morley area. It’s in the southern Mecosta County area where all deer hunters need to have their deer checked for chronic waste disease.

“I have 127 acres,” he said.

The biggest buck he’s harvested has been a 10-pointer. He owns 10 acres in LeRoy.

“You see deer all the time,” he said.

Hillis pointed out there are several Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club members that also belong to the Reed City Sportsman Club.
