BIG RAPIDS — A fire Sunday night at a Big Rapids home claimed the life of one woman.

Firefighters from the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety were called at 7:56 p.m. to a potential house fire at 132 S. Bronson Avenue.

“The call came in for a possible structure fire, but when firefighters arrived on scene they found the home fully engulfed,” said DPS Director Jim Eddinger. “Firefighters had been told there was a possible entrapment.”

Once on scene, firefighters were told by witnesses it was likely someone was still inside. They made their way into the home and found an 80-year-old woman in the kitchen area.

“They removed the victim and tried to revive her,” Eddinger said. “However, she succumbed to her injuries.”

The woman has been identified as Georgia Bauman and her family has been notified.

Firefighers from Big Rapids Township, Mecosta-Austin Fire and Rescue and Colfax Township assisted the city with the fire. Mecosta County EMS also was on scene.

Eddinger estimated it took two hours to really get the blaze under control.

The home appears to be a total loss. It is still too early to tell what caused the fire, Eddinger said.

“At this point it would just be speculation,” he said. “The investigation is still being conducted.”

A tape barrier is set up around the residence located at 132 South Bronson Avenue, which was engulfed in flames Sunday night.
