Ferris volleyball clinches title

HOUGHTON — The Ferris State University women’s volleyball squad captured its fourth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship as the Bulldogs beat Michigan Tech in a first-place showdown 3-1 on Saturday in the Upper Peninsula.

The Bulldogs fought back from an early deficit to secure the victory and earn the No. 1 overall seed for the upcoming GLIAC tournament. The title was Ferris State’s fourth-straight in the league’s regular season.

Ferris State dropped the opening frame 25-12 before rallying to post wins of 25-19, 26-24 and 27-25 over the next three sets.

Sophomore outside Allyson Cappel tallied a team-high 15 kills in the win while junior outside hitter Courtney Brewer was close behind her with 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Katie Placek and senior middle hitter Ayanna Buckley each had nine kills in the victory.

Sophomore setter Maeve Grimes compiled 45 assists for the match in leading FSU to the triumph.

Every player who saw the court for FSU had a dig for the match with senior libero Lauren Reminga notching a match-high 24 for FSU. Cappel had 13 digs while Grimes had 11 and Placek added 10 overall.

With the victory, Ferris State improved to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in the GLIAC.

The Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament and will host eighth-seeded Ashland on Wednesday evening in GLIAC quarterfinal-round action starting at 7 p.m. inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

With a quarterfinal win, FSU would then also host the GLIAC Semifinals and Finals on Saturday and Sunday in Big Rapids.
