BIG RAPIDS — Snow might not be sticking to the ground yet, but “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” To kickoff the season, the annual Tree Lighting ceremony is set for Monday, Nov. 27, at Spectrum Health Big Rapids.

This year marks the 20th tree lighting at Spectrum, and will feature volunteer Joyce Davenport as the honorary tree lighter.

“We are proud to honor Joyce at this year’s Tree Lighting Ceremony for her great work making Festival of Trees such a fabulous fundraiser year after year,” said Mary Kay VanDriel, president of Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals. “The event has raised more than $250,000 over the course of 14 years, and Joyce has helped make that possible.

“We invite the community to come honor Joyce and kickoff the holiday season with us as Joyce lights our holiday tree.”

The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at the corner of Oak Street and Winter Avenue. Attendees will be able to hear from the Big Rapids Public Schools choir, enjoy a sleigh ride around Spectrum Health’s parking lot, get their pictures taken with Santa and can warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. A special keepsake ornament will be available for those who attend.

“This is such a special gathering for our community,” Davenport said. “I’m humbled by the work everyone involved puts into this event, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
