Big Rapids hockey team opens at 1-1

Big Rapids squirts had a big weekend.

SAULT STE. MARIE — Big Rapids’ hockey team opened its season with a 1-1 effort this weekend at the Soo High Elks Showcase, in Sault Ste. Marie.

On Friday, it was a 3-0 loss to Lakeland. Big Rapids outshot Lakeland 32-28.

Senior defenseman Connor McAdams was cited as player of the game, coach Tim Blashill said.

Fletcher Bolda had a strong night in the net, giving up two goals on 28 shots with an empty-net goal as well.

The Cardinals beat Milford 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. Big Rapids outshot Milford 30-24.

Senior forward James Hundersmarck was named player of the game. Bolda allowed one goal on 24 shots.

Camden Massy scored off an assist to McAdams for first career high school goal. Big Rapids gave up the tying goal on the power-play with 1:15 left in the game.  River Spedowski scored with an assist to Ian Couch. “It was point shot from Ian, and River banged home the rebound,” Blashill said.

“It was a good all-around weekend,” he added. “We created many offensive chance, which is great but now we need to learn to finish those. We outshot both teams, but did not have many second or third chance shots and rebounds. We had very good play up front with James Hundersmarck, and Fletcher Bolda outstanding in net.”

Ferris Squirt tournament

The Big Rapids Squirt Blue defeated Big Rapids Squirt White, 4-2 in the championship on Sunday of the Ferris State-Big Rapids Tournament, at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Both teams finished the round robin portion at 3-0.  Scoring in the finals were: White, Brody Ososki (two goals) and Aidan Smith with one assist, and for the Blue: Cam Miller with two goals and Brayden Pischell and Jake Strohkirch with one apiece.

Jake Strohkirch also had one assist.
