Firefighters, police officers assist kids with Christmas shopping

Big Rapids Township firefighter Dryden Hauger and Big Rapids Department of Public Safety Detective Brian Miller help Savannah Bacon select gifts while shopping at Walmart on Wednesday during the annual Shop with a Hero event. Students from Morley Stanwood, Chippewa Hills, Big Rapids and Crossroads Charter Academy were selected to participate in the event. Police officers and firefighters from local departments — the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, Barryton Police Department, Big Rapids Department of Public Safety (fire and police), Ferris State University Department of Public Safety, Big Rapids Township Fire Department, Mecosta-Austin Fire Department and Morton Township Fire Department — were matched up with students to assist them in shopping for family members with money donated by Walmart. The students were first picked up after school and taken to Heartful Art Studio in Big Rapids, where they were able to make projects. Next, the children enjoyed a meal at the Rock Cafe on Ferris’ campus. After dinner, the children were driven to Walmart in police cars and fire trucks, with the lights turned on while driving down Perry Avenue. Once done shopping, the presents were wrapped up and each family was sent home with a meal. (Pioneer photo/Emily Grove)
