BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids girls basketball team will put its 5-0 record on the line when it hosts Tri County at 6 p.m. Friday night.

The Cardinals were able to have a brief shoot-around Wednesday due to weather conditions and followed that up with a two-hour practice on Thursday to prepare for the Vikings.

“We were able to get some shots up on Wednesday before we got kicked out,” head coach Jessica Haist said. “We’re battling some injuries and illness right now. We got a good two hours in today, which was good.”

The Cardinals are winning by an average margin of 11.2 points during their five-game win streak while giving up just 32.2 points per game.

While impressed with her team’s start to the season and play on defense, Haist knows there is plenty of room for her team to improve. The Cardinals have been prone to lulls on offense this season.

“We have to blend the positive with the negative, Haist said. “We have to take advantage of our strengths and get the ball inside. We also have to be able to hit shots from the outside to maximize that. We have to transition better. We have to push a little harder.

“We’re getting there.”

The Cardinals expect another tough game from the Vikings (1-2). Big Rapids split the series 1-1 last season, losing the first matchup 53-54 and winning the second 54-42.

“These are always good games,” Haist said. “They’re well-coached and prepared. They were at our game on Tuesday so they probably have some ideas on how to go after us.”
