BALDWIN — It’s been several days since boys basketball teams like Baldwin and Evart have seen competition.

It won’t be until next week when they and other area teams will get back on the court against an opponent.

But Baldwin and Evart opted to dust off the rust and play a two-hour nonscoring scrimmage on Friday at the Baldwin Elementary School.

Both coaches were happy with what they were able to accomplish.

“We wanted to work on our 2-1-2 press and our 1-2-2 defense,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “That’s what we spent a lot of today on. We were working out some bugs to try to get better.”

Baldwin (2-2) plays Custer-Mason Count Eastern on Jan 4. Also that day, Evart (0-3) will be home with Beal City.

The Wildcats haven’t play since Dec. 19.

“They’re working on the gym and stripping the floor so we came over there,” Morgan said. “Tuesday, we’ll start practices again. This worked out perfect for us. We’re getting healthier. Caleb Hutchinson got word he can start back in four more weeks. We’re looking for him to get healthy again.”

Carter Pritchard, who was expected to be among the Wildcats top players, is likely out for the season with a knee injury from football, Morgan concurred.

Pedigo had all but two players with him during practices this week. The Panthers haven’t played since Dec. 14.

“This time of year, being able to get into the gym and see someone else is big,” Pedigo said. “All we’ve been doing is practicing and playing against ourselves.”

Pedigo said it’s a plus for his team to play scrimmages against Class C schools like Evart to get them ready for the regular-season schedule, which is dominated by Class D squads.
