BIG RAPIDS — Pinterest may help in planning a wedding and getting ideas, but brides can touch, taste and smell their options at the upcoming Y-102 Bridal Show.

In its 18th year, the annual event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, in the University Center Ballroom on the campus of Ferris State University.

The bridal show will feature 25 vendors from the area, all offering services related to planning a wedding, including DJs, caterers, hair salons, bakeries and more.

Weddings require lots of planning and utilizing the businesses and services in the area, said Diane Scarpelli, marketing director for Big Rapids Radio Network

“Weddings are local. It’s hard to have a wedding in this area and attempt to put it together by using businesses from Grand Rapids,” Scarpelli said. “This is an opportunity for those getting married — or even planning a big event — to talk directly with area providers.”

Most vendors provide samples or examples of their work, with some also demonstrating what they offer, she added.

Scarpelli said brides are looking for what will set their wedding apart. While some attendees come prepared with photos of their wedding ideas, others are just starting the planning process and are seeking out inspiration.

“Brides may bring something they’ve found and see if a local vendor can accommodate what they are looking for,” she said. “People just want to know what’s available. They see it on Pinterest, but want to know if it can be done here.”

This year a vendor for a carriage will be at the bridal show, and brides can sit in the actual carriage that’s available to rent, Scarpelli said.

Vendors at the show will have all different kinds of packages, with some offering discounts. Brides also can put deposits down and make reservations with the vendors at the bridal show, Scarpelli said.

The event will have door prizes and attendees don’t have to be present to win a door prize, she said.

During the event there will be two dress fashion shows from America’s Bride – a wedding dress shop from Grand Rapids. The first show will be at 1:30 p.m. and the other at 2:45 p.m., with each show featuring different gowns.

When there isn’t a dress show, the stage will feature tuxedos, dance demonstrations, a tattoo cover up session and more.

Tickets are available in advance from participating vendors or at the door. For a list of participating vendors, visit the Y-102 Bridal Show Facebook page.
