Big Rapids hockey’s Carroll looking to increase production

BIG RAPIDS – Ben Carroll has been making key offensive contributions in his sophomore season as a forward for the Big Rapids hockey Cardinals.

But as the season continues through the second half, Carroll and his teammates wouldn’t mind stepping it up by several notches.

The Cards are coming off a 3-0 loss to Forest Hills Northern-Eastern on Saturday.

“We have to move our feet a lot more,” Carroll said. “We knew they were a skilled team and they would move the puck all the time.”

It’s Carroll’s first varsity season. He has played House hockey his whole life and one year of junior varsity hockey.

“It’s a lot faster,” Carroll said. “They’re looking for me to battle and get the puck in the net.”

Continuing into this week, Carroll has scored three goals.

“I’d love to exceed my expectations right now,” he said. “I can always do better. I need to work hard in practice.”

Big Rapids is at a showcase in Traverse City this weekend and has been slightly above the .500 mark.

“We’re not all on the same page out there,” Carroll said. “We want to come together and figure it out.”

The goal, for the Cardinals, Carroll said, is to be on top of their game by the regional tournament, which they won last year.
