BIG RAPIDS — Local business owner and gardening enthusiast Carlleen Rose will give a presentation on straw bale gardening at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, at the Big Rapids Community Library, 426 S. Michigan Ave.

Rose has grown her own straw bale gardens for several years and is happy to share the techniques and information with others. Straw bale gardening involves planting in prepared straw bales instead of in the soil. Doing so elevates the plants for ease of access, avoids soil-borne diseases or poor soil quality issues and eliminates the need for weeding.

Rose’s presentation is part of the Festival of the Arts and serves as the kick-off for the Big Rapids Community Library’s 2018 Seed Library Series.
