MECOSTA COUNTY — Friday night fish fries are a common event in area communities, especially during Lent, the period of time from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

During Lent, the Catholic faith forbids eating meat on Fridays for everyone age 14 and older, so many Catholic communities have fish fry events during that time to raise money for various causes. Locally, both St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids and St. Michael Catholic School in Remus offer fish fries during Lent.

However, other organizations also utilize fish fries as fundraisers, with some taking place year-round.

Fish fries offered in Mecosta and Osceola counties include both seasonal events during Lent and every-Friday options.
